As this place is very special, I've come to Stewart for several years to use their bath house, but on Aug 18 2017, the experience was quite different. It used to be a clothing optional relaxed place, but now there are signs posted everywhere with rules. You have to leave your clothes on even in the sauna and when dipping in the cold creek, and then run around in the cold sarong they give you, or your swim suit. The plants on the property are dying as no-one waters them. It is not very clean anymore, and most of the staff is not friendly. I was told the ownership changed, and that the place is basically a cash cow and losing its spiritual quality. I guess they are now trying to even further focus on profits by catering more to the mainstream. The native Indians who hold their ceremonies at Stewart are also not too happy, but their sweat lodge experience is still great and recommended.
A really serene experience - mineral water, sauna, and spiritual lake soak forms such a nice combination. Energy in this place is so tranquil and peaceful. Room is filled with spiritual crystals, people are friendly and nice. I would love to live here for a period of time
Camp sites are not much more than a parking spot for $35 a night. Nitch community- and unique- could be awesome if they were not so uppity. Most hippie communities are very friendly, helpful and welcoming. I suggest they revisit that philosophy.
Now you have to dress up. What happened fear took over!
I stayed at the Stewart Mineral Springs Retreat overnight for 2 nights, and used the sauna and the creek on my check-out day. When I informed staff person that I was going to go get lunch and come back, I was surprised to learn that I can't use the facilities without paying extra. The staff person said, 'your check-out time is 11 AM, and after that you are not considered guests'. I tried to say that most places allow the use of the facilities for some time after a check-out. But the staff person cut me short, saying that I can use the facilities as long as I pay for them. In other words, I had to pay extra for day use. I informed her that I already spent $200+ for 2 nights, but she said she already explained everything. I asked to contact her manager and it turned out that that her manager was going to be available only after 5 hours. I asked if we can call the manager, and the person said that the manager is in a private session and was not to be disturbed.
It felt like being booted out from the grounds. Me and my wife were both upset, and we had to change our plans for the day. So, if you plan to stay overnight at Stewart Mineral Springs Retreat, be prepared to pay extra on your check-out day, if you want to be on grounds after 11 AM.
I bring people to Mt. Shasta and will go to the retreat. All is good, but we lost the natural freedom.
